Detox Center for Women: Detoxification Services for Drugs & Alcohol in Orange County, California

Why Detox with New Directions for Women?

Detox room at New Directions for Women

New Directions for Women offers gender-responsive detoxification services with medical supervision. Often, detox is the first step in the recovery process whereby an individual can safely create space between themselves and the substances. Our detox center in Orange County, California is designed with you in mind. It is small, support-oriented, and staffed by female healthcare staff, a female psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, and medical director.

What sets our detox apart from other facilities is the individualized care that each person receives. What this means at the detox level is that everyone is assessed regularly and is assigned medications based on their presentation versus set regimens which is common in treatment. We know that one size does not fit all, and we treat accordingly.

Our goal is to ensure that you go through detox safely and effectively. We do this through 24-hour monitoring, use of medication-assisted treatment (MAT), and regular assessment. At New Directions for Women, we understand the biological differences related to detox that may affect a woman or a pregnant woman differently. As such, we take care to understand the physical history of each person to better understand how they may respond to detox. We are built upon the understanding that women accessing wellness can be difficult given the differences in social expectations and responsibility, family concerns, pregnancy & physical differences. Our healthcare staff considers these roles when creating a unique plan for you. Your story is important to us.

What Is A Detox?

The body undergoes withdrawal when ceasing the use of any substances that have been used for long periods of time. Long-term use of substances causes the body to adapt to the substance for survival and in doing so, creates what we call physical dependence. When that substance is removed the body’s “normal” way of operating becomes interrupted which cause the body to react through several symptoms: shaking, nausea, flu-like symptoms. A detox facility utilizes healthcare and medical protocols to assist the body in adjusting to stopping the use of substances and to move through these symptoms more comfortably.

At New Directions for Women, we use evidence-based addiction treatments and therapies for detoxification from substance use. We understand how difficult it is for addicts to stop substance abuse independently. We offer the support and safety needed to ensure a safe medically-assisted detox program.

What is the difference between detox and treatment?

Exterior of New Directions for Women facilitiesDetoxification and treatment are different phases of the treatment process. Detox focuses on becoming physically well to be able to participate in other levels of care. The primary focus is the physical effects of withdrawal. Detox is short term and usually is a necessary step before entering into treatment where we focus on the psychological and social aspects of recovery. You can expect detox to range from a few days to a little over a week depending on the substances. This, of course, can vary, and will depend on your individual assessment.

Treatment is a longer-term program that focuses on learning about the physical dependence, its effects, and identify ways to combat its effects in your life. Treatment can be in a residential or outpatient setting and depending on which could be a few weeks to a few months. Treatment uses group therapy, education, therapy sessions, and case management to help achieve a footing in recovery.

What Drugs Need a Medical Detox?

Medical detoxification can be a challenging time, even for well-supported clients. But it is the most effective treatment method that provides structure and accountability to help doctors and clients navigate complex situations.

While some drugs may require slow, controlled weaning to reduce and stop their dependency, others require clients to use medications during detox to manage their withdrawal symptoms and cravings.

1. Alcohol

Alcohol is a mind-altering, mood-changing “drug.” If consumed excessively over time, it can cause severe withdrawal symptoms when the addict suddenly ceases its use. This is because the addict’s central nervous system (CNS) gets used to releasing endorphins (feel-good hormones) in the brain.

Drinking heavily for years and then stopping consuming alcohol suddenly may cause severe withdrawal symptoms, such as:

  • Headaches
  • Bodily shaking
  • Intense restlessness, irritability
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Insomnia or difficulty sleeping
  • High fever or excess sweating
  • Severe fatigue

In some cases, clients undergoing alcohol withdrawal can have even more intense, life-threatening symptoms, such as:

  • Delirium
  • Hallucinations
  • Seizures

Abrupt cessation of high alcohol consumption can be dangerous, possibly life-threatening, and must only be done under medical supervision, such as our center for alcohol detox in Orange County.

2. Drugs

Chronic and heavy use of drugs, particularly certain classes like opioids, benzodiazepines, and stimulants, can lead to a strong physical and psychological dependence. Over time, the body adjusts its internal balance in response to the drug’s presence, often leading to changes in the central nervous system (CNS) and the release patterns of neurotransmitters.

Abruptly discontinuing or significantly reducing intake of such drugs after prolonged use, can trigger a host of withdrawal symptoms, including:

  • Muscle pain and stiffness
  • Agitation and anxiety
  • Flu-like symptoms, such as runny nose and yawning
  • Intense drug cravings
  • Rapid heartbeat or palpitations
  • Tremors or twitching
  • Digestive issues, including diarrhea and vomiting

For those deeply addicted, suddenly stopping certain drugs can produce even more severe, potentially life-threatening withdrawal symptoms, such as:

  • Intense depression or suicidal thoughts
  • Respiratory depression (in the case of opioids)
  • Seizures (especially with abrupt cessation of benzodiazepines)
  • Severe confusion or psychosis
  • Elevated blood pressure or heart rate, which can be dangerous

Like alcohol, the abrupt cessation of certain drugs, especially after heavy or prolonged use, can be hazardous and even fatal. It’s crucial that anyone seeking to stop drug use, especially if they have been using heavily or for an extended period, do so under medical supervision to ensure safety and manage withdrawal symptoms.

This might include inpatient or outpatient rehabilitation, therapy sessions, joining support groups, and ongoing medical monitoring. Many facilities will have a structured aftercare program to support women in their ongoing recovery journey and help prevent relapses.

Insurance coverage for detox for women varies by plan. Most plans cover some form of treatment, but it’s essential to check with your insurance provider for specific coverage details, including inpatient and outpatient services.

To provide a secure and supportive environment for individuals beginning the recovery process, detox clinics in Orange County usually conduct a medical evaluation, verify insurance, and conduct an initial assessment as part of the admissions process.

With symptoms ranging from moderate anxiety and tremors to severe problems like seizures, alcohol detox can feel like a real challenge. While each person’s experience is unique due to their unique alcohol consumption history, these symptoms can be safely managed with medical supervision.

People who have a history of excessive drinking in particular should not attempt alcohol detox at home without medical supervision because doing so might cause serious withdrawal symptoms. Seek the counsel and assistance of a medical professional as soon as possible.

Depending on the drug, the degree of dependence, and individual health problems, home drug detox can also be harmful. Withdrawal can be painful and, in extreme circumstances, fatal if not managed properly. Medical supervision is essential.
